Islam is rooted on the theological idea that one single god, Allah, is the source for existing things known and unknown. The meaning of Islam is to not only attain peace with God but also with oneself as well as other creations of God. Islamic followers are called Muslims. This is an Arabic word meaning adhering to one God. This involves submission to God by your own will and in complete trust and love. Surrendering one self peacefully to the absolute powerful but merciful Allah is affirmed by obedience and acceptance. God delivered his message to the prophet Muhammad through an angel called Gabriel. The prophet Muhammad is purely human and was divinely selected to serve as the messenger of God. On many occasions the prophet Muhammad would be challenged by the Obigarchy Meccan tribe who insisted that the prophet should perform miracles to support his prophetic claims, but a revelation from God instructed the prophet to respond by saying: ââ¬Å"Say I do not say: With me are the treasures of God and I do not know the invisible, and I do not say that I am an angel, I only follow that which is revealed to meâ⬠(Sura 6:50). The holy scripture of Godââ¬â¢s divine revelations is called the Koran or ââ¬Å"the recitation.â⬠This is Godââ¬â¢s complete revelations to the prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel in the Arabian Peninsula. Islam consists of five pillars, the first being faith. One must accept the fact that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger. This recitation is called the ââ¬Å"shihada,â⬠and its recitation in Arabic is ââ¬Å"La illaha illa Allah, wa ana ashadu Muhammad rasulu lââ¬â¢Allahâ⬠. (The Koran) One must recite this, with sincere meaning and true intentions to become a Muslim. Secondly, prayer or ââ¬Å"salat,â⬠which is obligatory for all Muslims to pray five times a day.
